In today’s suffering economy, one industry which is still hiring is the trucking industry. As long as there are products that need transported truck drivers will be in demand. Some drivers satisfy a local market’s need while others drive goods across the country. In some cases, as we see with the popular History channel television show “Ice Road Truckers“, drivers are even willing to risk their life in extreme situations in order to get the job done.
So how do you find a truck driving job? First you need to get licensed as a commercial driver in your state, also known as a CDL (Commercial Drivers License). In order to get your CDL check with local community colleges and go to Google and search for your city and state plus CDL. For example if you are in Tampa, Florida your search would look like this “Tampa Florida CDL” but without the quotes.
As you are training begin to think about what kind of truck driving you want to do. This is critical as you can begin to put together a list of companies that you would like to work for. Here is a list of types of truck driving:
- Freight hauler
- Construction hauler
- Hazardous hauler
- Tank hauler
- Flat bed hauler
- Long haul driver (away from home for 3 weeks or more)
- Road driver (away from home for around 1 week)
- Local hauler (usually stay home, occasionally away from home for 1 or 2 nights)
- Low boy hauler
- Large double beds
- Small double beds
- Straight truck
- Other types of specialized hauling
Once you’ve got your CDL and know what type of truck driving you want to do, picking a list of potential employers is much more efficient than simply calling everybody. If you want to focus on driving hazardous materials, make a list of companies that have this as a specialty, do a search in google for “hazardous material delivery” or something similar and focus first on those companies.
Here is a list of additional truck driving resources which will hopefully get you on the road to truck driving freedom:
