Unemployed graduate numbers are expected to rise to record levels in the next few years with graduates facing warnings that students will be facing competition for jobs to a level previously unheard of. The most recent report by the Higher Education Careers Service Unit was made public just hours after the story broke regarding the fact that up to 270 graduates were in some instances competing for the same vacancy.
Applications for jobs have increased by 15% since this time in 2008 and as the recession and increase in graduates continues it has put a big strain on the market.
It has been reported that the nest four years could be the most difficult for graduates who are looking for jobs. Careers services have been bracing themselves for the increase in people knocking on the door in response to this.
It is estimated that last year around 22,000 people graduated and were unable to find work, this is around eight per cent of the total number, although recent cuts due to the recession could be to blame for part of this.
To attempt to help with the economic recovery some large corporations have announced that they will be taking on an increased number of graduates this year. The number of jobs is available this year is up by 18% following the past two year’s decline. These figures may not seem too negative but it is important to understand that they literally put us back to where we were in 2006 regarding recruitment.
The sheer amount of applicants has now reached a record level with demand for jobs escalating 15% compared to what it was in 2008. This suggests that there is, on average, 45 students attempting to fill each job vacancy, the figures rise to almost 270 for marketing roles.
